Immediately after the polls closed on Saturday night, CNN projected that the former South Carolina governor had come up short to Trump. During the fourth quarter of 2023, Haley out-raised Trump, $24 million to $19 million. In January 2024, as the rest of the GOP field winnowed, Haley’s fundraising again bested Trump’s, $9.8 million to $8.8 million. To her credit, Haley has taken dead aim at both Trump and Putin, accusing the former of emboldening the latter. During the 2016 South Carolina primary, there were still six serious candidates in the GOP race.

CNN —As the dust settles on the tenure of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, there are lessons the Republican Party should learn. As the Republican caucus considers its next steps, they must choose a leader whose stewardship signals a clear break from the past. Here are the ways that Trump triggered the events that fueled McCarthy’s downfall. In 2022, Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker, a former football star whose controversial candidacy was fueled by his connection to the former president, met the same fate. Fast forward less than a year and Trump was nowhere to be found when McCarthy’s fate as speaker hung in the balance.

CNN —There’s no other way to slice it: Donald Trump is the clear GOP White House frontrunner for 2024. His reelection is not out of the question, given President Joe Biden’s dreadful showing in recent opinion polls. Geoff Duncan — APThe political world was rocked by the recent Washington Post/ABC News poll pegging Biden’s approval rating at a jaw-dropping 36%, a new low point for his presidency. Even polls that haven’t been quite as dire for Biden, like CNN’s Poll of Polls, showed his average approval at 40%, with 55% disapproving.
